I hope we all realize it, but we're lucky. We get to work in an industry that's fun, fast-paced, ever-changing, and cool. After all, when you tell people what you do for a living and what industry you're in, what kind of reaction do you usually get? The bottom line is foodservice is hip.
As we digest the recent news that Amazon is buying Whole Foods, there's another important statistic the foodservice industry needs to consider. According to the USDA, for the first time in our nation's history, food spending away from home has surpassed food spending at home.
Not so long ago, there was a huge buzz on how the fast casual restaurant segment was going to completely disrupt the foodservice industry. The idea was that smaller chains focused on higher quality and diverse menu offerings would continue to grab more and more of the market share.
Well it's been a few weeks since we all met up in Phoenix for the 2016 MAFSI conference, and it just about took us that long to recover. Not only does this industry like to have fun, it likes to have fun four nights in a row. With extra legroom in the exit row, the flight home was restful, for sure.
